Our interdisciplinary program, the only program of its kind in California, provides training in normal (spoken and signed) language, language disorders, multilingualism, and in the neural bases of language learning, use, and loss. It is designed to educate a new generation of scientists who are interested in applying state-of-the-art research skills to the study of communicative disorders. We are very proud of our program, students and faculty. Our doctoral program ranked fourth on the Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index rankings compiled by Academic Analytics and released by *The Chronicle of Higher Education *in 2007. The National Research Council (NRC) ranked our doctoral program among the top ten in the nation in their most recent rankings (2010). The majority of our graduates hold faculty positions in universities or research scientist positions in labs here in the US and abroad. *GOALS:* 1. To provide doctoral training in the study of language and communicative behavior with an interdisciplinary focus that integrates state-of-the-art knowledge from the fields of communicative disorders, cognitive sciences, neurosciences, psychology and linguistics represented by the expertise of core faculty from SDSU and UCSD. 2. To prepare professionals, educated in the interface between behavioral and cognitive neuroscience methodologies, who will provide critical leadership in research and health services. 3. To prepare Ph.D.-level scientists in the field of language and communicative disorders to serve as faculty in university programs and scientists in a variety of settings to carry out much-needed research on the processes of language development, disorders, assessment and intervention. 4. To prepare researchers to carry out much-needed research in communicative behavior and disorders in bilingualism. *ASHA CLINICAL CERTIFICATION:* Although this is a research Ph.D. program, SLHS offers a separate graduate program in SLP. It may be possible to complete a CFY or obtain academic and clinical training concurrently with doctoral studies. However, access to clinical training is not automatic nor is it guaranteed. *RESOURCES AND SUPPORT:* In fall 2008 our program at SDSU moved into a new clinical, research, and academic building with state-of-the-art Speech-Language and Audiology clinics, wonderful high-tech labs, and great new instructional facilities. These resources, combined with the outstanding facilities at UCSD, provide doctoral students with the best possible training environment. Several different funding sources are used to support doctoral students including program scholarships, graduate assistantships, in-state and out-of-state fee support, and faculty grants. We currently have an NIH doctoral training grant “Neurocognitive Approaches to Communication Disorders” ( http://slhs.sdsu.edu/student-resources/current-students/financial-aid/traineeships/nih-grant/). This funding, along with other institutional and grant funding, provides us with resources to support our doctoral students. Contact Dr. Lew Shapiro ( shapiro at mail.sdsu.edu) for more information regarding this training grant. *SDSU/UCSD Joint Doctoral Program in Language and Communicative Disorders* *San Diego State University* *5500 Campanile Drive* *San Diego, California 92182-1518* *Telephone: (619) 594-6354 <%28619%29%20594-6354>* http://slhs.sdsu.edu/programs/phd/admissions/ *Tracy E. Newman) Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2014 18:37:40 +0000 Subject: Ph.D. Program in Hearing and Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park Message-ID: Ph.D. Program in Hearing and Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park The Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences (HESP) at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park is accepting applicants to its Ph.D. program. This program emphasizes research and scholarly achievement, and is designed to foster intellectual independence in the disciplines of normal and/or disordered processes of speech, language, or hearing. Students engage in an integrated set of research activities and scholarship to prepare them for successful careers in academic and research settings. The program entails four to five years of full-time study, which includes graduate-level coursework, research and professional development seminars, a candidacy project, and a dissertation. Regular interactions with faculty mentor(s) enable students to define their own areas of interest, promoting a dynamic, energetic, and collaborative research environment. This year, we will admit approximately 2-3 Ph.D. students. These trainees will join a vibrant community of students who are among the most successful in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences to obtain external funding. Our Ph.D. students routinely present their work at major national and international conferences, publish in high-impact journals, and secure prestigious positions upon graduation. OPPORTUNITIES. Ours is a fundamentally translational field, and HESP graduate students can leverage society's emerging interest in translational science through our active clinic and top-rated clinical training programs, which together provide openings for conducting basic-plus-applied research. The Ph.D. in HESP is not a clinical degree, but students are invited to integrate the department's clinical resources into their program to inform their research. Overall, trainees will have access to internationally recognized scientists and laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art resources including: eye-tracking systems for psycholinguistic reading and spoken language studies in young children and adults; sound-proof testing rooms for speech- and auditory-perception experiments in young and older populations; preferential-looking setups for language development research in infants; electrophysiological recording systems for hearing measures; various neuroimaging facilities (e.g., fMRI, MEG, EEG) at the Maryland Neuroimaging Center (www.mnc.umd.edu/); the Aphasia Research Center (http://aphasia.umd.edu/); and other behavioral testing suites outfitted for studying normal and disordered groups (acquired and developmental). Current research combines cognitive, linguistic, computational, and/or neurobiological approaches to study language development, processing, and disorders throughout the lifespan. Our program prepares students to unify these methods through an interdisciplinary approach and convergent investigation of the mechanisms supporting language development, processing, and plasticity. For a list of HESP labs and faculty interests, visit http://hesp.umd.edu/content/labs-collaborations-and-initiatives. For a program overview, see http://hesp.umd.edu/content/program-highlights-doctoral-program-hearing-and-speech-sciences. CAMPUS COMMUNITY. Trainees will benefit from well-established connections to related communities on Maryland's campus, including the Program in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (http://www.nacs.umd.edu/), the Maryland Language Science Center (http://languagescience.umd.edu/), the Center for the Comparative and Evolutionary Biology of Hearing (http://www.ccebh.umd.edu/), and the Center for Advanced Study of Language (http://www.casl.umd.edu). Existing interdisciplinary collaborations include cooperative co-mentorship arrangements with faculty within the department and across different departments such as Psychology and Linguistics. UMD is home to the largest and most integrated community of language scientists in North America. BROADER COMMUNITY. The College Park campus is located in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area in close proximity to numerous world-renowned medical institutions and research facilities including the NIH, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Johns Hopkins University, Children's National Medical Center, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where cross-institutional collaborations routinely occur, permitting students to explore specialized research interests. APPLICATION PATHS. Successful applicants will have well-defined research interests and prior research experience, and are accepted into the program as a whole, not into particular subfields. Trainees enter our doctoral program in several ways. Some apply directly following their Bachelor's degree or a clinical degree in the field (e.g., M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology; Au.D. in Clinical Audiology) or pursue a joint degree program, in which they complete both the clinical degree and the research Ph.D. at Maryland (e.g., Au.D./Ph.D. and M.A./Ph.D.). Others apply to the Program in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NACS), and select HESP as their home department. The application deadline for Fall 2015 admission to the Ph.D. Program in HESP is January 15, 2015 (http://hesp.umd.edu/content/how-apply). The application deadline for Fall 2015 admission to the Ph.D. Program in NACS is December 1, 2014 (http://www.nacs.umd.edu/program/apply.html). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Info-CHILDES" group. However, you will be forever their "prisoner" - you have to pay around £800 a year for service (which always dates back to January of that year, regardless of when you actually started to pay), or they won't talk to you nor help you when you've got problems, when versions are updated or when the computer on which you have the software dies, and the software for which you paid good money is no longer supported. If you skip a year or two and then renew your service payment, you pay a heavy "fine" for each year for which you didn't pay. The issues they point out are not specific to French, though. You can find the audio of the talk on their website in their users meeting archives. In general it seems to work very well across languages (so far), but it's always best to be cautious when using it in new ways. It has definitely been used with French before though. As for their technical support fees, they work on the fee-for-service model and are not open-source or freeware. They are a not-for-profit, and do have real ongoing operating costs, so it's not just a money-grab, but it's not a model that academics like very much. As long as you budget that tech support fee into your operating costs and thinking in the costs of the project, it's not a big deal compared with the initial set-up cost. But they could probably do a better job of making sure people are aware of that up front. We currently have an NIH doctoral training grant ?Neurocognitive Approaches to Communication Disorders? ( http://slhs.sdsu.edu/student-resources/current-students/financial-aid/traineeships/nih-grant/). This funding, along with other institutional and grant funding, provides us with resources to support our doctoral students. However, you will be forever their "prisoner" - you have to pay around ?800 a year for service (which always dates back to January of that year, regardless of when you actually started to pay), or they won't talk to you nor help you when you've got problems, when versions are updated or when the computer on which you have the software dies, and the software for which you paid good money is no longer supported. If you skip a year or two and then renew your service payment, you pay a heavy "fine" for each year for which you didn't pay. We, stupidly, gave free talks and publicity for them in a conference they organised, but their service is never free. Just something to keep in mind!
