The ASHA conference covers a wide array of topics relating to normal and
disordered communication, in a unique forum where basic science and
academic research and clinical training sessions co-exist.
Convention submissions are invited in science and clinical practice in
speech, language and swallowing and science and clinical practice in
audiology. Readers of the CHILDES list will be particularly
interested in the Language Science program area, to which this year’s
theme (see above) is particularly suited. The Language
Science committee will be hosting invited speakers on a variety of
topics, including fMRI, the molecular genetics of language disorders,
dual route models of reading, aging and cognition in bilinguals, lexical
access, and connectionist modeling (details forthcoming).

In addition to the invited speakers, the Language Science Program
Committee seeks submissions in any of the following areas:<br><br>
- Brain-behavior relationships: Cognition/language, neural
plasticity<br>
- Normal speech/language processes: Spoken and written language<br>
- Theories and models of language and its disorders<br>
- Computer-based and other research technologies for interfaces among
speech, language, <br>
and sociocognitive/sociolinguistic processes<br>
- Multicultural /cross-linguistic issues and research in language
science<br>
- Research methodology and data analysis (quantitative and
qualitative)<br>
- Educational and professional issues specific to language
science<br><br>
In addition, ASHA will be offering <b>twenty five $500 student
scholarships</b> this year. To be eligible, a student must submit a
proposal for a technical session. The 25 scholarships will be
divided among the topic coordinators based on the number of student
technical session proposals received, thus the number assigned to
Language Science papers has yet to be determined. Please encourage
your students to submit proposals.<br><br>
Submissions to ASHA are completed on-line. Submitters must select a
topic content area, of which Language Science is one. Formats
include posters, 15 minute technical papers, one and two hour seminars,
and short courses. Detailed instructions for submissions and a
