</b>Applications are invited for two four-year Research Assistant /

Officer positions funded by a grant from the ESRC (Economic and Social

Research Council) for research on "The Cognitive Effects of

Bilingualism Across the Lifespan"<i><b>.</b></i>  The

successful applicants will work under Prof. Virginia Mueller

Gathercole and Dr. Enlli Mon Thomas.  The purpose of the research

is to examine the cognitive effects, particularly with regard to

executive functions, of bilingualism from early ages through the

elderly, and across various patterns of language dominance

(Welsh-dominant, English-dominant, Welsh-English balanced, etc.).<br>

Both Researchers must be fluent in Welsh and in English.<br>

<br>

The age ranges to be studied will be divided between the two posts. 

One post will be responsible for primary school children (7-8

year-olds), adolescents, younger adults, and older adults.  The

other post will be responsible for younger children, ages 2-3, 3-4,

and 4-5.<br>

The Research Officer will oversee the day-to-day operation of the

project in addition to the duties associated with the data collection

related to the assigned age ranges, and should have a Masters degree

or equivalent preparation  in Psychology, Linguistics, or a

related field.  The Research Assistant will have a minimum

Bachelors degree or equivalent preparation in Psychology, Linguistics,

or a related field.<br>

Both researchers will assist in the design of the stimuli for the

study (e.g., creating task items and stimuli).  Each will be

responsible for recruiting and arranging the testing of all the

participants in the age ranges assigned to him/her.  This will

include advertising, contacting schools and nursing homes, creating a

research timetable, allocating participants appointments for testing. 

Usually, the Researcher will travel to the participants (e.g., to

schools or nursing homes).  They will also score and enter data

onto the computer, analyse data, and assist in write-ups for

publication.<br>

The candidates must have familiarity and experience with statistical

packages (e.g., SPSS, Excel) for analyses (or the desire and ability

to learn these), and it is desirable that they have experience working

with children or adults or the elderly.  Experience in conducting

experimental studies is also desirable.  Experience and

competence working on the computer (or willingness and ability to

learn) is required.  Familiarity with psychological and

linguistic terminology is desirable.<br>

The post will begin on October 1, 2006 (or as soon as possible

thereafter), and will continue until September 30, 2010.<br>
