<P>To answer the baby's babbling, as if they were 'real' words, is very important for them to develop into real words. The baby, while developing its language, is busy associating the different sounds with a concept. Somewhere along the line, the 'word' that originally had no special meaning, turns into a 'real word'.</P>
<P>I have doubts about words like mother and father being deliberately spoken early, unless they hear those words several times a day. Food (or a substitute for it, like 'nam-nam') is more credible.</P>
<P>My baby daughter once, while sitting at the dinner table with us, started making a choking sound, 'kh-kh'. Initially, we didn't understand why, but as we gave her something to eat she was satisfied for awhile and then started making the sound again.<BR>She often picks up stuff from the floor, and puts them in her mouth, and we used to say 'kikh' (a word for dirt), so she would spit it out. Obviously she'd mixed it up.</P>
<P>It's true a lot of parents interpret babbling as words, but there are others, like myself, who totally miss the first words, expecting something more understandable... My first son had several 'words' before I even noticed, because I thought they would be more like adult speak. I just wasn't listening carefully enough.</P>
