<p>Should parents be encouraged to teach their hearing infantsto communicate using gestural signs? Does signingin infancy advance child behaviour and development as claimed by many commercially available products forparents? To answer these questions, a reviewwas undertaken to evaluate currently available research studiesthat examined the effectiveness of prelingualsigning for normally developing, hearing infants.Databases, reference lists and the Internet were searched forrelevant documents using a pre-determined searchprotocol. Seventeen reports met the review’sinclusion criteria and were retrieved and evaluated. The reviewfailed to support claims that signing facilitateslanguage development, due to insufficienciesin scientific methods and to equivocal results.
