<b>Tenure-track Assistant Professor, Department of Applied
Linguistics<br>

Position Summary</b><br>
<br>
The Department of Applied Linguistics, Portland State University,
invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the
Assistant Professor level. The department offers an undergraduate
major and minor in applied linguistics, a one-year TESL certificate,
and an MA in TESOL; we are in the process of applying for permission
to offer a PhD in Applied Linguistics. The department is also home
to the Intensive English Language Program, one of the largest and
oldest academic English programs on the West coast. The ideal
candidate will be someone with strong training in quantitative
research methods whose research agenda relates to the programs of
the department and faculty research interests, and who can support
current departmental strengths in second language acquisition,
discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and/or psycholinguistics.
Candidates must be comfortable in an Applied Linguistics program
committed to excellence in teaching and student mentoring. They must
likewise demonstrate the ability to link research, theory, and
practice in applied linguistics, broadly conceived. The ideal
candidate will have familiarity and experience with diverse uses of
technology in teaching and research in applied linguistics and
language education.<br>

<b>Responsibilities</b><br>
<br>
Responsibilities include teaching two courses per quarter (three
terms/year), advising students, and supervising graduate students as
well as maintaining an active research agenda, including seeking
external funding. Service to the department, the institution, and
the discipline are likewise expected.<br>
<br>
<b>Required Qualifications</b><br>
<br>
· Ph.D. in applied linguistics or a related field in hand by
start date, September 16, 2011. Candidates whose degree is not in
applied linguistics should make explicit in their application how
their research and teaching relate directly to applied linguistics.<br>
· A research agenda that relates directly to the programs of
the department and faculty interests.<br>
· The ability to teach two or more of the following courses:
structure of English, syntax, psycholinguistics, and language
assessment.<br>
· Training in quantitative research methods, experience using
them, and the ability to teach them.<br>
<br>
<b>Preferred qualifications</b><br>
<br>
· Experience teaching a second or foreign language (English or
another language) and familiarity with the types of instructional
programs that generally employ MA TESOL graduates<br>
· Experience incorporating technology effectively into
teaching.<br>
· Training in and the ability to teach experimental research
methods.<br>

<br>
Compensation is competitive and includes an excellent benefits
