Dear Info-CHILDES,<br>

Neither Apple nor Microsoft have been able to help me with a problem I have<br>
with phonetic fonts. I have an old PC that I have had since 2009, and a new<br>
Mac. The PC has Office 2007 running Word 2007, and the MacBook Pro has<br>
Office For Mac 2011. <br>
<br>
The difficulty I have is with the Mac. In Word For Mac 2011 there is no<br>
provision to insert DoulosSIL fonts from a dropdown menu like the one in<br>
Word 2007. I have downloaded the DoulosSIL font family, and they work<br>
perfectly on the Mac (e.g., if I open a document created on the PC). <br>
<br>
Have you encountered this problem, and do you have any idea how to configure<br>
Word For Mac 2011 to do the Insert > Symbol manoeuvre with the phonetic<br>
fonts, including diacritics? <br>
<br>
Alternatively, how do you make Word For Mac 2011 "do" phonetics?<br>

I am not sure whether you can 'fix' Word, as my experience with it is limited. However, I offer two nice solutions below which you may want to explore:<br>
<br>
1) Brian Hall's IPA Palette, a nice (free) IPA input utility, available through CHILDES and described at the following address:<br>

<br>
2) PopChar, an excellent (paid) application to insert symbols from any of the fonts installed on your system, whichever the application you are using:<br>
