Hi there,

All the current operating systems support IPA and extensions
natively, including Mac OS X, Linux distributions and Windows 7. In
OS X you can go to the Finder Menu (the Apple) into System
Preferences... and there select Language & Text in the upper
icon list. In Language & Text select Input Sources and activate
for example Keyboard & Character Viewer and at the bottom "Show
input menu in menu bar". This will show you a flag for your selected
keyboard in the upper right menu bar of the Finder. If you select
this, you can for example switch keyboard layouts, if you have
selected some of them, and you can in particular select "Show
Character Viewer". This will give you the full font inventory on
your Mac. Note that the new operating systems have usually installed
a full set of Unicode fonts. If you select any of the characters in
the Character Viewer, it will be pasted in Word, or any other editor
or program you use.

Same functionalities exist in Windows 7. Look under Start > All
Programs > Accessories > System (or something like this, can't
check, do not have one around right now). Also, on common Linux
distros you will find similar possibilities, and you can use them in
OpenOffice or alternative Office distributions.

Sincerely
Damir
Dear Info-CHILDES,

Neither Apple nor Microsoft have been able to help me with a
problem I have
with phonetic fonts. I have an old PC that I have had since
2009, and a new
Mac. The PC has Office 2007 running Word 2007, and the MacBook
Pro has
Office For Mac 2011.

The difficulty I have is with the Mac. In Word For Mac 2011
there is no
provision to insert DoulosSIL fonts from a dropdown menu like
the one in
Word 2007. I have downloaded the DoulosSIL font family, and they
work
perfectly on the Mac (e.g., if I open a document created on the
PC).

Have you encountered this problem, and do you have any idea how
to configure
Word For Mac 2011 to do the Insert > Symbol manoeuvre with
the phonetic
fonts, including diacritics?

Alternatively, how do you make Word For Mac 2011 "do" phonetics?

Best wishes,
Caroline
Dear Caroline,
I am not sure whether you can 'fix' Word, as my experience with
it is limited. However, I offer two nice solutions below which
you may want to explore:

1) Brian Hall's IPA Palette, a nice (free) IPA input utility,
available through CHILDES and described at the following
address:
target="_blank">http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/tools/unimac.html

2) PopChar, an excellent (paid) application to insert symbols
from any of the fonts installed on your system, whichever the
application you are using:

I hope you find (some of) this useful.

With best regards,
Yvan
