    The Department of Modern Languages at Carnegie Mellon
University invites applications for one (1) position as a
Visiting Assistant Professor of Spanish and Second
Language Acquisition to begin in January 1999 for 18
months. This is a temporary replacement position.

    Responsibilities include teaching a balance of
undergraduate and graduate courses with a typical load of
one undergraduate Spanish language course in a
culturally-oriented program and one SLA course at the
undergraduate or graduate level each semester. Ideal
candidates will have a strong commitment to undergraduate
education, research interests at the graduate level,
interdisciplinary interests beyond their own field of
expertise, and enthusiasm for participating in a
relatively new doctoral program in second language
acquisition.

    Requirements: Ph.D. in second language acquisition,
applied linguistics, or a relevant area of linguistics; a
strong publication and research record; and evidence of
effective undergraduate teaching in Spanish.  Applicants
should possess native or near-native proficiency in
Spanish.

    Procedure: Applicants should send a letter of

they plan to attend during Fall 1998, a curriculum vitae,
copies of publications (not to be returned), and the names
