                  POSITION ANNOUNCEMENTS
           DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE
                UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

I. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities invites applications
for one or more tenure track Assistant Professors. These
full-time nine-month positions will begin fall semester
1999. Salary competitive and commensurate with experience.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to
pursue a rigorous program of research, engage in
outstanding teaching, advise graduate and undergraduate
students, and engage in service.

    Near-native fluency in English as well as in Spanish
and/or Portuguese is required. A Ph.D. or foreign
equivalent in Spanish and/or Portuguese or a related field
is required by the appointment start date. Field is open
[and includes Hispanic linguistics].

    After preliminary consideration is completed,

II. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the
University of Minnesota seeks a Director of Language
Programs. The rank will be at tenure-track Assistant
Professor or tenured Associate Professor, depending upon
qualifications and experience, and consistent with
existing collegiate and university policy. Salary
competitive and commensurate with experience. This
full-time nine-month position will begin fall semester
1999. In addition to expertise in program administration,
TA training, and proficiency testing, the successful
candidate will demonstrate the ability to pursue a
rigorous program of research in Hispanic linguistics,
engage in outstanding teaching, advise graduate and
undergraduate students, and engage in service. A Ph.D. or
foreign equivalent is required by the appointment start
date. Near-native fluency in Spanish and English is
required.
