Call for papers: First Workshop on Spanish Sociolinguistics

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University
at Albany (State University of New York) is pleased to announce its
First Workshop on Spanish Sociolinguistics March 14th & 15th, 2002.  The
focus will be on:

a. Dialectical variation of Spanish: both at the geographic and the
social level.

b.  Spanish in contact including:
    *  Spanish in contact with other languages:

       1. In Spain: Contact with Basque, Catalan, Galician, Valencian,
etc.
       2. In South America: contact with indigenous language including
Mayan languages, Belize, Quechua, Aymara, Tupi-Guarani, etc.
       3. Elsewhere: Contact with Portuguese, Arabic, Philippine
languages

    *  Spanish/English bilingualism in the US: both in the case of
heritage speakers and emigrants.

We welcome original papers (30 minutes in length) on any situation of
dialectal variation, language contact, and bilingualism that involves
Spanish.

Abstracts should be submitted via email to Lotfi Sayahi
sayahi at albany.edu no later than January 15, 2002. Please include:

   1. title of the paper
   2. author(s)'s name
   3. author(s)'s affiliation
   4. one-page abstract
   5. a 100-word summary.
