KEY PURPOSE
To provide leadership in the administration and coordination of
activities in Spanish and in the Department of Languages; to
contribute to the teaching of courses in Spanish language and Hispanic
literature and culture for native and non-native speakers at all
levels; to contribute to the consolidation and development of the
existing programmes in Hispanic literature, language and culture; to
conduct research and contribute to the research activities of the
Department of Languages and the School of Humanities.

ORGANISATIONAL ENVIRONMENT
The Department of Languages is one of seven departments in the School
of Humanities, which is the largest Academic Organisational Unit in
the University. The Department teaches undergraduate and postgraduate
programmes in French, Italian, Modern Greek and Spanish.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The key responsibilities and selection criteria identified for this

The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with other
members of the staff in Spanish, the Department of Languages and the
School of Humanities, and will be expected to:

* teach Spanish language and literature at any level, teach specialist
courses in language, literature or other cultural areas, and be
prepared to undertake this teaching also in the Department's Outreach
Languages Programme off campus (eg. at the University of Adelaide),
and offshore if required;
* carry out research and contribute to the Department's research
activities;
* supervise honours and postgraduate students;
* contribute to the consolidation and expansion of the existing
programmes in Hispanic literature, language and culture;
* take an active role in the administration and coordination of
activities in Spanish and the Department of Languages, and contribute
to the administration and coordination of activities in the School of
Humanities, under the Supervision of the Head of that School;
* be involved in professional activity on behalf of the Department of
Languages, including, for example, liaison with schools and the
Spanish-speaking communities in South Australia;
* promote and provide a safe working environment for students, staff
and visitors with attention to the requirements of the Occupational
Health Safety and Welfare Act, the Workers Rehabilitation and
Compensation Act and Equal Opportunity legislation.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
The appointee will be responsible to the Head of the School of
Humanities, and will contribute with other staff to the integration
and management of aspects of the academic and administrative life of
the School and the Department of Languages.

SELECTION CRITERIA
(Note for intending applicants - applicants should address each

For Level C: Essential criteria
* A PhD in Spanish language, applied linguistics, Hispanic literature
or a related cultural area, or an equivalent level of research
publications and experience;
* native or near-native competence in both Spanish and English;
* demonstrated ability to teach university courses in Spanish language
and Spanish and Latin American literature, culture or other areas of
related expertise at upper as well as lower tertiary levels;
* demonstrated experience in supervising honours and postgraduate
students;
* demonstrated effective administrative experience in a University
department, including the ability to coordinate the academic
activities of the Spanish programme and to enhance its profile;
* demonstrated commitment to and performance in research;
* demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in a
range of academic activities.

For Level D: Essential criteria
* A PhD in Spanish language, applied linguistics, Hispanic literature
or a related cultural area, or an equivalent level of research
publications and experience;
* native or near-native competence in both Spanish and English;
* demonstrated ability to teach university courses in Spanish language
and Spanish and Latin American literature, culture or other areas of
related expertise at upper as well as lower tertiary levels;
* extensive demonstrated experience in supervising honours and
postgraduate students;
* demonstrated effective leadership experience in a University
department, including the ability to coordinate the academic
activities of the Spanish programme and to enhance its profile and
that of the Department of Languages;
* demonstrated commitment to and performance in research and research
leadership;
* demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in a
range of academic activities.

For Levels C and D: Desirable Criteria
* demonstrated ability to contribute to the consolidation and
expansion of existing programmes in Spanish language and Spanish and
Latin American literature and culture;
* a demonstrated research and teaching interest in applied linguistics
and second language acquisition in a Spanish speaking context;
* ability to develop on-line teaching materials and to contribute to
the development of courses in the area of Flexible Delivery and
distance education;
* an interest, supported by experience, in forging links with the
primary and secondary sector, other tertiary institutions, government
departments and industry.
