/><p>The FunDETT (Functions of Discourse: Evaluation in Text Types)

research group is organizing this international workshop, whose main

aim is to bring together scholars who will explore and analyze the

evaluative function of language. The workshop is based on the premise

that the analysis of discourse‐pragmatic functions is vital for

finding meaning in any kind of text, and we focus on the evaluative

function of language and on how this function is realized at different

linguistic levels, different text types and different cultures. <br

/>The workshop emphasizes the fact that the discourse function of

evaluation is an important phenomenon which is worth studying due to

the fact that, among other things, it helps in the realization of

other prominent sub‐functions of language, such as: 1) Expressing

opinion; 2) Maintaining relations; or 3) Organizing the discourse

(Thompson & Hunston, 1999: 6).<br /><br />We shall thus welcome

contributions on the following topic<br />- Theoretical and empirical

approaches to evaluation<br />- Evaluation in different text types

(within oral, written, computer mediated, literary or nonliterary

discourse)<br />- Evaluation manifested through the different

linguistic levels (phonological, syntactic, etc.)<br />- Gender and

evaluation<br />- Evaluation across cultures<br />- The relationship

between verbal irony and evaluation<br />- Different theoretical

viewpoints on evaluation: Appraisal Theory, Functionalism,

(im)politeness Theory, Stance, etc.<br />- Grammaticalization of the

phenomenon of evaluation in language<br />- Pragmatic meaning in

contrast with semantic meaning, as a rich source for the

identification of evaluative polarity<br />- Corpus‐based approaches

to evaluation in different languages and cultures<br />- The

expression of evaluation on the web (social networks, e‐mail,

websites, etc.)<br />- Any other aspect of the evaluative function of
