/>Descripción

“Relevance theory: recent
developments, current challenges and future directions”

The research group “Intercultural Pragmatic Studies
(English-Spanish): Pragmatic and Discourse Aspects” is pleased to
announce the celebration of the Fifth International Symposium on
Intercultural, Cognitive and Social Pragmatics (EPICS V, the Spanish
acronym for “Encuentros de Pragmática Intercultural, Cognitiva y
Social”). This Symposium will be held in March 14-16, 2012, at Pablo
de Olavide University, Seville, Spain.

After addressing
issues related to (im)politeness, intercultural pragmatics or
interlanguage pragmatics in previous editions, this fifth edition of
the Symposium turns its attention to Relevance-theoretic pragmatics.
Under the topic “Relevance Theory: recent developments, current
challenges and future directions”, we hope that this 5th edition of
EPICS gathers practitioners of Pragmatics and other neighbouring
fields to discuss and present works on their latest research in the
field of relevance-theoretic pragmatics, as well as to share
experiences and suggest new avenues for research within this
theoretical paradigm in the near future. EPICS V also wishes to create
awareness among graduate students not only of the growing interest in
an area of linguistic expertise such as Pragmatics, but also of one of
its most vibrant paradigms, namely Relevance Theory.

For
this edition, we will be honoured with the presence of Prof Deirdre
Wilson and Prof Robyn Carston (UCL, London and CSMN, University of
Oslo), as keynote speakers. The titles of their lectures will be
announced in due course.

1. Conference presentations
types

We welcome original presentations in English, which
can be made any of the following types:

A) Oral
presentations

Oral presentations on any of the subjects
that come within the list of conference topics below or on any other
topic related to Relevance-theoretic pragmatics. These must be 20
minutes in length, followed by 10 minutes for questions and
discussion.

B) Posters

Printed posters on
any of the subjects that come within the list of conference topics
below or on any other topic related to Relevance-theoretic pragmatics.
Participants presenting a poster must obey the following norms:

- Posters should be no larger than 118,9 x 84,1 cm (A0).
- They may be printed in colour or in black and white.
- Poster
presenters must bring a printed copy of their poster with them to the
conference. Note that there will not be printing facilities at the
conference venue. Presenters will also be responsible for displaying
the poster and turning it down at the time and in the place designated
by the conference organisers.

2. Topics

The Symposium especially covers, but is not limited to, works that
present recent developments, implications and applications of
Relevance Theory, and propose further paths for future research in the
following areas (obviously, the list is not exhaustive):

-
Relevance and communication
- Relevance and understanding
-
Pragmatic processes in understanding
- Relevance theory and
syntax
- Relevance theory and morphology
- Relevance theory
and prosody
- The conceptual-procedural distinction
-
Lexical pragmatics
- Metarepresentational dimensions of language
use
- Relevance theory and figures of speech (metaphor, irony,
simile, hyperbole, etc.)
- Relevance and discourse
-
Relevance and humour
- Relevance theory and translation and
interpreting
- Relevance theory and (im)politeness or relational
work
- Relevance theory and the architecture of mind
-
Epistemic vigilance
- Experimental testing of specific
theoretical claims
- Contrasts between relevance-theoretic and
other pragmatic approaches to specific phenomena

3.
Submissions

Contributors to EPICS V, regardless of whether
they give an oral presentation or present a poster, must submit a
one-page abstract no longer than 350 words, accompanied by a
step-by-step outline of the presentation and the following
information:

1. Author’s name(s) and affiliation
2.
Title of paper
3. Audio-visual equipment required (computer, VHS
video, OHP, cassette, etc.)
4. E-mail address(es)
5. Postal
address(es)

Proposals must be sent as email attachment to
both Manuel Padilla Cruz (mpadillacruz@us.es) and Reyes Gómez Morón
(rgommor@upo.es).

4. Dates

Deadline for
receipt of abstracts is November 1st, 2011. Proposals will be
peer-reviewed and notification of acceptance will be sent by December
15th. The organising committee will plan the programme as soon as it
has selected the successful abstracts, so please indicate on the
abstracts if you cannot present your paper on any day of the
conference (March 14-16), as it is very difficult to reschedule papers
after the programme has been planned.

5.
Publication

After the Symposium, EPICS V participants are
invited to submit revised and extended versions of their work for
publication at an international publisher. The final text (maximum
10000 words) can be submitted (Word or RTF format) after the Symposium
but no later than June 1st, 2011. Style guidelines will be provided
in due course.

6. Conference fees

Until

Accommodation:

In order to make easier your arrangements
for EPICS V and make you enjoy your stay in Seville as much as
possible, the Research Group “Intercultural Pragmatic Studies
(English-Spanish): Pragmatic and Discourse Aspects” has prepared the
following list of hotels where you can find accommodation during the
conference. All these hotels are located in different places of the
city and offer a special price for participants and contributors.
Reservations must be done by each participant or contributor.
Furthermore, when contacting hotels, you should indicate that you are
participating at EPICS V (Congreso de la Universidad Pablo de Olavide)
in order to obtain the special price. We recommend booking in advance
since our symposium takes place during Seville high season.
We
hope you will circulate this Call for Papers to your colleagues and
others in your professional network, and to any discussion groups to
which you may subscribe. For more information, feel free to contact
