<p dir="ltr" style="text-align:justify;margin-bottom:6pt"><span
xml:lang="en-GB" lang="en-GB">The object of the present review is the
recently published book </span><span class="cursiva"
style="font-style:italic;" xml:lang="en-GB" lang="en-GB">Historia
crítica de la lexicografía gitano-española</span><span
xml:lang="en-GB" lang="en-GB"> (Brno, Universidad de Masaryk, 2011,
295 pp).</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="text-align:justify;margin-bottom:6pt"><span
xml:lang="en-GB" lang="en-GB">Ivo Buzek, the author of the book, is
not a novice in his field of interests. In 2010 he published a book
called </span><span class="cursiva" style="font-style:italic;"
xml:lang="en-GB" lang="en-GB">La imagen del gitano en la lexicografía
española</span><span xml:lang="en-GB" lang="en-GB"> that dealt with
the same topic from a slightly different perspective. But despite this
apparent similarity, his new book offers new information and there are
at least two significant differences. First of all, his attention is
now pointed to the dictionaries and not to the Gypsy words included in
them. And also, in contrast to the previous book, he deals exclusively
with the dictionaries of Caló and he leaves out the dictionaries of
Spanish such as the dictionary of RAE that also contains words of
Gypsy origin. </span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="text-align:justify;margin-bottom:6pt"><span
xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US">The book fills in the gap existing up to
now in the literature concerning the critical and contextualized
history of Gypsy-Spanish lexicography. The lack of this kind of work
is even more surprising if we take into account that the Gypsy-Spanish
repertories (dictionaries or glossaries in most cases) have a
considerably long tradition not only in Spain, but also abroad.
Nevertheless, with the exception of articles and minor publications, a
thoroughgoing monograph was not available up to now. </span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="text-align:justify;margin-bottom:6pt"><span
xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US">The core of the book consists of five
chapters. Firstly, Buzek provides brief information about Caló in
order to clarify the terminology. In the second chapter, he marks out
several lexicographical criteria that are generally applied to define
bilingual dictionaries. Then, he points out some general
characteristics of all the Caló dictionaries such as macro- and
microstructural features, lexical creativity and the phenomenon of
plagiarism. After this general framework, the author proceeds to the
description of each dictionary/glossary in a chronological order. He
divides them into three groups: the most exhaustively treated one
includes Caló dictionaries. The next chapter covers the glossaries
inserted in other publications, such as didactic manuals or scientific
articles. The last chapter is dedicated to the online Caló
dictionaries.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="text-align:justify;margin-bottom:6pt"><span
xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US">The dictionaries are described in the
following way: after a bio-bibliographic note concerning the author of
the dictionary he offers a detailed external description of the volume
and he includes numerous illustrative pictures of selected pages to
document his observations. The next unit, analytical study and
commentary regarding the language, treats briefly with various
problems such as already mentioned lexical creativity. As the author
himself proclaims in the prologue, he intends to offer a
historiographical study situated in the context of the Spanish
lexicography. On the other hand, a detailed examination or an
etymologic analysis of the lexicon contained in the dictionaries is
not the objective of his study. He sums up his observations about each
dictionary of interest in a concluding note. The evaluation of the
dictionaries is based on the modern criteria that are generally
applied to bilingual dictionaries but, at the same time, the author is
conscious of the impossibility of their strict fulfillment in case of
Gypsy-Spanish repertories, because many of them were printed in the

lang="en-US">th</span><span xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US"> century
when Caló was already in decline. Therefore, it would be more
appropriate, though unfeasible, to adopt some criteria that were valid
at the time of their origination. In the conclusion of each section,
Buzek also focuses on the usefulness of the dictionaries for potential
users. </span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="text-align:justify;margin-bottom:6pt"><span
xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US">According to the observations of the
author, most of the Caló dictionaries are not original works based on
a field research. On the contrary, there is a remarkable tendency
towards plagiarism and compilation. Buzek sees the reason of this
trend in the demand of the commercial market and pronounces a
hypothesis that the online dictionaries that are not under a
commercial pressure could be of a higher quality and could reflect the
real language situation of present-day Caló. Unfortunately, not even
the online dictionaries come up to his expectations.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="text-align:justify;margin-bottom:6pt"><span
xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US">The author presents in a rigorous and
uniform way a detailed description of the lexicographical repertories
of Caló. From the lexicographical point of view, therefore, its value
is doubtless and it completes the lexicographical history of bilingual
dictionaries. </span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="text-align:justify;margin-bottom:6pt"><span
xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US">The work is especially intended to be
user-oriented. But who are the potential users of Caló dictionaries?
They are certainly not the same as the typical users of other
bilingual dictionaries: one could hardly find, for example, a
translator or a high-school student among the users of Caló
dictionaries. The users of Caló dictionaries would be most probably
scholars or students interested in the language or culture of the
Spanish Gypsies, e. g. linguists, flamencologists or Gypsy activists.
There could eventually be a group of non-expert people that accesses
these repertoires just for curiosity. The user-oriented evaluation
therefore can result questionable if based on the modern criteria for
bilingual dictionaries.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr" style="text-align:justify;margin-bottom:6pt"><span
xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US">The present book facilitates a better
orientation in the complex and specific problematic of Caló
repertoires and thus can be very useful e.g. to the scholars that wish
to find valuable dictionaries for their studies. On the other hand,
the users interested in Caló do not find complete information about
all historical sources of Spanish Romani because the book deals, as
the author says in the prologue, with dictionaries and other lexical
repertoires of Caló and he leaves out sources that do not contain
glossaries (mainly sources such as </span><span class="cursiva"
style="font-style:italic;" xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US">Aucto del
finamiento</span><span xml:lang="en-US"
lang="en-US"> </span><span class="cursiva"
style="font-style:italic;" xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US">de
Jacob</span><span xml:lang="en-US" lang="en-US"> or more modern
literary pieces where Gypsy characters use Caló words, cf. i. e.
Clavería, 1951). Although there is no deep analysis of the language,
the description of macro-and microstructure of each dictionary and the
comparison of the lexicon contained in it easily reveals plagiarism
and original works. A scholar interested in Caló obtains thus crucial
information about which dictionary is worth to get and which one can
be left out. Especially from this point of view the book is very
recommendable. </span></p>
