Corpus materials have been used in Cognitive Linguistics from very early
on, but perhaps more so in studies by European scholars than in those by US
linguists. Also, these earlier studies are mostly "corpus illustrated"
rather than "corpus driven". In recent years, the interest in a more
systematic exploitation of large text corpus has definitely grown. There
are currently two groups that make use of advanced corpus techniques: on
the one hand, Stefan Gries and Anatol Stefanowitsch (who will be launching
a new journal "Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theory" in the near
future), and on the other, my own research group ("Quantitative Lexicology
and Variational Linguistics", with Dirk Speelman, Stefan Grondelaers and a
number of PhD's: see http://wwwling.arts.kuleuven.ac.be/gling/team.htm).

Yours,
Dirk Geeraerts
