[Lexicog] semantic extension

Here are two examples from English:

chicken: 1) kind of bird (an object)
               2) kind of meat made from this bird ( a mass)
               3) metaphorical extension: he is a chicken

tool: 1) originally used for physical objects like hammers and axes
        2) extension to abstract devices such as software or exegetical
helps one uses

  Yesterday I learned that the Cheyenne word for purse has been semantically
  extended to mean 'budget.' Interesting!

  What examples of semantic extension have you come across in your lexical
  research?
