John K --

Your description of the problems associated with the standardization of
writing systems for North American Indian languages was very interesting.
You could turn that into a good paper for presentation at a conference, such
as of the SSILA. What you have to say involves technology, archiving,
sociolinguistics, literacy and phonology. The technological component of
your overall analysis might quickly become dated, but the sociolinguistic
component is more enduring.

I have been under the conviction that discussion lists such as this one are
a fertile soil for growing a paper, as they allow one to develop one's
thoughts in a tentative way and then get feedback that can go into refining
and further developing the paper before it is presented. The response from
Microsoft's Adam Dudsic, forwarded to this list by Rudy Troike, could in
some form go into your paper, if you should decide to pursue this idea.
