I shared some of our discussion on big/large with some colleagues here who
are interested in language matters, and one responded with the following
observation:



Re the discussion of large and big.  It's interesting that restaurants
usually use "large" in reference to their portions (small, medium, or
large).  False elegance?

Do small and little follow the same rule?  I recall a sign on NYC buses
during the 60s that always struck me as, well, a little plebeian.  It read:
"Little enough to ride for free?/Little enough to ride your knee."  (That
was in pre-childseat days, of course.)  Perhaps it's only a register thing,
as in the difference between "a small child" and "a little kid."
