Rudy,

Does the sense of register for "big/large" and "little/small" also derive
from how these words collocate together? A quick google on the internet
showed these collocations:

"large and small" = 4,160,000
"large and little" = 564

"big and small" = 592,000
"big and little" = 139,000

These collocation figures suggest that whatever register properties "large"
has have been transferred to "small" too. "large" and "little" don't seem to
go together well at all -- except in the case of the British comedy duo
(Syd) Little and (Eddie) Large.
