[Lexicog] an English idiom

My first reaction is that this wasn't an idiom, but either a poetical
expression or a overliteral translation.

If I do a Google search on "swallowed up in sorrow" there are a lot of
hits.

Most of them are Christian sites, including a quote from Charles Wesley and
