[Lexicog] Exporting & Printing in Shoebox

Hi Susan,
I'm assuming you are using Windows, the Export--Multi Dictionary Formatter
feature in Toolbox, and exporting your dictionary to Word. If not, what I
say may need to be re-interpreted. Especially, I don't know how Toolbox on a
Mac works...

First thing to check is: After the dictionary opens in Word, you're supposed
to go to the Tools Menu, and select "Finish Exporting from Toolbox." This
runs some macros which may possibly fix your clipped header problem.

If you've done this, your #2 problem is easy to fix: Place the cursor into a
scientific name and note the style name that's attached. Go to Format
Menu--Styles, and choose the Scientific Name style. Modify this style to
remove underlining, and before you click OK make sure the little box "Add to
template" is checked. This will change this style permanently for that
template.

If your #1 problem, clipped headers, is still a problem you can do the same
thing with the Header style: Either make the font size a bit smaller or
check to make sure that the Paragraph Line Spacing is "automatic," or
"single," or at least set to a point size that's big enough for the font
point size, allowing for your diacritics. Again, to make any changes
permanent check "Add to template." If you forget to do this, you may
"Modify" the style again and check "Add to template," even though you're not
making any other changes.

If this doesn't solve your clipped headers, perhaps you need to increase the
available Header space? Play with the Page Setup of your dictionary--change
the top margin and Header placement (on the Layout tab).

When you get the Page Setup settings you want, to make them permanent you
need to open the template directly. You should probably make a copy of the
original template first, adding Karuk to the filename or something.

IMPORTANT: If you change the name of the template, you must also add this
new template to your Toolbox Export process! You'll find the template
specified if you open the File--Export box, select Multi Dic..., click
Modify, then click Audience--Setup... I think the default English Audience
template will be "mdf_e.dot." Save your new custom template in the same
folder.

Also IMPORTANT: If you want to export with a "National language Audience,"
you'll also have to customize the mdf_n.dot template, which you should see
in the Audience--Setup window.

OK, you've made a copy of the template. Now open it directly in Word, either
by right-clicking on the filename in Explorer, or in Word select File--New,
choose Files of Type: Document Templates, then browse to find it. You can
play with the Page setup--page size, margins, header placement, etc. Then
save (make sure it's set to Type: Templates). Then make sure you tell
Toolbox to use this template next time you export the dictionary.

So to summarize: Style formatting changes can be made to a template anytime,
but to permanently change Page Setup you need to open the template directly
and save it "as Template."

I hope this helps. Sorry if I've given more details than you need... Maybe
someone else can use this discussion as well.

I'm printing out a draft of the Karuk-English dictionary, and there
are two things I want to fix.

1. The header words at the top of the page are clipped at the top.
The ascenders and the accent marks of these words are getting
cut off.

The one thing I can pin this problem to is that the default page
setup seems to be for 'US Letter Small' rather than simply US
Letter.

2. I don't want the scientific names italicized and underlined -
just italicized.

How can I permanently change the stylesheet, or make a Karuk
dictionary stylesheet that specifies these properties?

Thanks!
