I recommend Ralph Patai's classic study "Arab Mind" which helps understand
the intense concern
with honor and courage in Arab culture and society.

In Arabic, there are many expressions to talk about both "courage"
(shajaa9a) and "cowardice" (jubn). One of the expressions about courage is
"Shujaa9 kal asad" (As courageous as a Lion." As for cowardice, one of the
expressions is: "jabaan kal faar" (As coward as a mouse). An Arabic
thesaurus contains hundreds of words and expressions on the subject.
