Following up on an earlier speculation (which ignited the fuego en el
hogar), I asked a Spanish speaker from Hermosillo, capital of Sonora
state in NW Mexico, whether the real estate industry had managed to
remake "hogar" ('fireplace, hearth, family circle') as equivalent to
"casa" ('house'), the way that "home" had been coerced as a replacement
for "house" in the US, and just received the following sad confirmation.

Subject: Casa/Hogar

I've been thinking about "casa" and "hogar" and I think that "hogar" has
been used lately for real estate advertising purposes. They use phrases
as "tu futuro hogar" [your future home] and they show pictures of happy
families. They use "casa" in phrases like "tu casa nueva desde $....",
so they use that word for monetary purposes. They rarely put "hogar"
and numbers in the same ad.
