[Lexicog] authentic recordings versus generated elicitation forms

I'm curious about how you folks feel about generating forms for
acceptibility judgements in order to fill out gaps in the lexicon. The
Yahgan language was very rich in productive derivational morphology,
particularly verb serializations. As many of you probably know,
combinatorial explosion is an unavoidable consequence of such
productivity, tempered by semantic compatibility of the combined
morphemes.

Have any of you had experience in utilizing such productivity to
accelerate the acquisition of materials for a dictionary? Or are there
any qualms about doing so, especially in a critical language
endangerment situation, where judgements about acceptibility might
have changed considerably from those of a more fluent speaker community?
