Claire's and Bill's suggestions and caveats are excellent, and should be
in any handbook for fieldwork. I just wanted to add that the technique
of generating forms by analogy and testing them with consultants has an
honorable history, having been utilized by Stanley Newman in his work on
Yokuts. He was criticized later by behavioristically-influenced structur-
alists who insisted that only freely spontaneous text by native speakers
was legitimate fare for analysis and description. But utilized with
appropriate caution, it can be a valuable technique.
