In the Old Testament (in the book of Job) "to bless" (Hebrew BRK) is used
euphemistically for its opposite.
A  left-handed compliment has about the same function.

  It's interesting that "bless" can also be used euphemistically with
  a converse meaning, as in "to bless someone out", which means to swear
  at them, usually in blame for making a foolish mistake.
