Now, this does work because "none" takes its number from its referent:

None of us is confused.
None of us are confused.

But

None of us am confused.

Naah. "none" doesn't take its person from its referent.

"none" can be singular or plural, count or mass but it can't be first 
person. Nothing isn't quite everything.
