Footnote to John Roberts:

   Again, sorry, John -- Chomsky has eliminated all grammatical labels from
his toolkit (except as convenient notational devices for our visual benefit).
All elements in the numeration, as he calls it, have features, which must be
checked, and (as of last writing) all heads must have specifiers for features
to be checked in, but lexical items simply enter into binary combinations
without benefit of superfluous grammatical labels.
