Hi, Ron -- We've done picture dictionaries in many Mexican languages, including Nahuatl, Mazatec, various Zapotec languages, Mixtec, etc. The booklet I prepared in Tilquiapan Zapotec has 18 semantic domains with about 500 words pictured. If you like, I can send you a CD with the Publisher 2003 file (which is very large), just let me know.

Domains include: The skies, the countryside, plants, birds, marine animals, wild animals, domestic animals, insects etc., the cornfield, the kitchen, toys, clothes, fruits and vegetables, tools, people, the human body, what people do, and numbers.

Has anyone produced a visual dictionary? There are several in English (and I suppose other major languages). I’m interested in examples for minority languages.

A visual dictionary would be composed of pictures with labels. A page might contain numerous pictures of animals with each animal labeled in the vernacular (and perhaps the national language). Another page might contain a large picture of a house with each part labeled. If anyone knows of a dictionary that has employed this type of format, I would appreciate knowing how to obtain a copy.

  Thanks,

  Ron Moe
