Before you go any further, I would suggest looking at what other people 
have done by way of corpus processing.  You might start with the 'Corpus 
linguistics' article at Wikipedia, which has a good list of links and 
references at the end; or buy the book
    Chris Manning and Hinrich Schütze, Foundations of Statistical
    Natural Language Processing, MIT Press. Cambridge, MA: May 1999
Or perhaps people on this mailing list will recommend other resources.
