Hi, Margaret,

 

What do you find hard to believe? 

Christendom – Christentum

sheikhdom  - Scheichtum

etc. seem pretty clear equivalences between English and German

also cases like ‘martyrdom’/’Märtyrertum’

While ‘chessdom’ and ‘dogdom’ cannot be done in German.

I could not find any list at www.canoo.net

The German suffix –tum corresponds approximately to English –dom, but one
cannot use it for creative word formations like in English (chessdom,
queendom,

dogdom).
