[Lexicog] citation forms and how to 'file'

Piotr,

Thank you for your thoughtful and thought provoking response. It gives
me much to work with. Allow me to answer some of your questions in return.

In answer to your first question (glossing verb forms with full
sentences), I learned lexicography from Len Newell (and used as a text
his 1995 work "Handbook on lexicography for Philippine and other
languages"). He promotes the use of role participants in the 'gloss
comment' to indicate a word's collocation ability (where possible). So
since in the Lengo world one only ever paddles a /thinaghe/ 'canoe',
it is included as a role participant to indicate the limited
collocation possibilities for /vovothe/'s patient. By way of contrast,
one would /thua/ 'pole'--and not /vovothe/ 'paddle'--a bundled
together raft of sticks. So you're right--I have already made a
partial decision concerning citation form (though the two verb forms I
cited--/vovothe/ and /digi/--are not inflected).

You also ask: "how regular is the reduplication? Is it perfect CV-?" I
would like to be able to say it is "perfect CV-", but I cannot. There
are a few 'exceptions' . . . Perhaps I do need to enter the forms
separately. But at least now I have a rationale for doing so!

Finally, you wonder whether /gh/ is aspirated /g/. Perhaps I should
have clarified the orthography. The proposed orthography for Lengo
uses three digraphs:
<gh> is ɣ (voiced velar fricative)
<ng> is ŋ (velar nasal)
<th> is ð (voiced dental fricative)

Thank you for the paper references--they look very applicable. Now to
read them . . . ;-)

Paul
