just a suggestion: perhaps you should also consult the definition vocabulary in any of the main dictionaries of English as a second or foreign language (Collins Cobuild, Oxford, Cambridge, MacMillan, Longman). it would result a quantity of words not too big to handle and covering the main senses needed to primary school
I would be interested in colaborating in any enterprise with Spanish as it happens to be my mother tongue

Does anyone know if Ogden's Basic English word list is available anywhere as an electronic shell dictionary? I.e. in Fieldworks or Shoebox etc. with parts of speech added, senses separated and so on.
 
My aim is to produce small, cheap English to mother-tongue dictionaries for minority languages in Africa to help with schooling. 
 
I'm also interested in equivalents in French, Spanish and other major languages.
