        I am sympathetic.  I was not able to find an advisor for a PhD in historical linguistics three decades back

        and ended up in comparative linguistics—a synchronic study, rather than a diachronic one.  I should have 

        continued with Professor Pei at Columbia or Professor Dassonv ill e at Texas but fate did not allow me to do

        so.  You might consider checking the editors list at Merriam-Webster or similar top dictionary publishers 

        to see who is established in the field. 

         

        If you are young enough, mobile enough, and persistent enough, you should get your wish.
