Shoebox actually does a pretty good job of exporting its data to html
as long as you use the built-in MDF database type. This is basically a
set of field markers it supports during export. Not many people have
attempted this and those that do sometimes get confused when it doesn't
work because it must be exported into an existing folder structure
which contains certain files. These folders and files are already
installed with a standard Shoebox installation but most people are not
aware of it. <br>

I have created a whole website devoted to publishing the dictionaries
SIL produced in Suriname with the help of Shoebox. <a

Some of our dictionaries were not initially in MDF format and that can
be a lot of work to convert it. But in my eyes, it was worth it because
of the built-in support Shoebox then gives you for exporting either to
rtf or html. Shoebox has a set of index pages which point to the
alphabetical pages. So the link 'a' would point to the page 'a.html'
which contains all the entries beginning with the letter a. In addition
to that Shoebox also creates the reversed index list in html as well so
that you can have for example an English-Cheyenne finder list based on
the English glosses you provide in the \ge field. As for internal
links, Shoebox automatically creates hyperlinks from at least 4
different MDF fields: the \va or variant, the \cf or cross-reference,
the \lv or lexical function, and \mn or main entry cross-reference.
These create links from within an entry to another entry in the
dictionary. These are the 4 fields with which I have had success with
in exporting hyperlinks. There could be more that I'm not aware of. I
created a cd with more than a dozen dictionaries and 5 vernacular
translations which contained more than 220,000 hyperlinks in total. The
vast majority of these Shoebox created. There is no way I would have
attempted such a project without the support of Shoebox. <br>
Through this
process I bumped up against some of the limitations which Shoebox has
in exporting to html as well. The support for creating hyperlinks for
some fields is not as good as others in certain situations, whereby you
end up with broken links. But I found work-arounds by creating cc
tables to manipulate the exported html files and correct the code. I
still have these cc tables if anyone ever needs them. I think that the
next incarnation of Shoebox (Toolbox) will eventually improve the
export capability of html and hopefully address the current
limitations (bugs) as well. One such possibility might be to offer a
\html field which can contain valid html code (a table or a link to
graphic or sound file) which can be exported as is. I have tried that
with the current version but the export process messes with the code.<br>

So to summarize, if you use the correct database type (MDF) and the
correct fields (cf, va, lv, mn) you can get Shoebox to export
hyperlinks automatically. After exporting I also used Dreamweaver to
modify my pages and check for dead or broken links, which was a
tremendous time-saver. There is no way I would have attempted to check
every link by hand to make sure it wasn't broken. <br>

document markup make it very easy for native speakers (and others) to use
technology that goes beyond the printed page. It is very helpful for
dictionary users to be able to click on a linked form in a dictionary entry
and have the link take the user to a related form elsewhere in the
dictionary document. I know how to manually insert the hyperlinks using
Microsoft Word or an HTML editor. But I do not want to spend hundreds of
hours manually inserting the hyperlinks when it is possible for a program to
do so. Can Shoebox insert internal links which which will be clickable after
Export to Microsoft Word or HTML?
