dictionary is a compilation of a variety of information about a word. If you
want to collect words, all you need is a knowledge of the language and a list of
semantic domains. If you want to indicate the pronunciation of the words, you
need a knowledge of phonology. If you want to indicate the inflectional pattern
or part of speech of the words, you need a knowledge of grammar. If you want to
write definitions, you need a knowledge of semantics. If you want to indicate
how words are used, you need a knowledge of pragmatics and socio-linguistics. If
you want to indicate the etymology of the words, you need a knowledge of
historical linguistics. So a lexicographer needs to be a generalist in
linguistics as well as a specialist in lexicography. If your training in
linguistics is lacking, you need a team whose collective expertise covers each
kind of information you hope to include, or you need to get more
