I think Dick's approach (which is also my preference) will work fine if
one understands "major" and "minor" right. Maybe it would be better to
say "enter all of them as independent entries", and then link them with
the appropriate kind(s) of links. And this assumes, of course, that if
one chooses to limit the dictionary to relatively unpredictable forms
(as there is plenty of practical reason to do for languages like Amele,
or the Nawatl I work in), one will do so in a principled way that will
take some thoughtful discrimination.

Such an independent entry for an idiosyncratic inflectional variant of
another word might well have little content other than a link
specifying that it is a "rdp form of X" or "component of (X compound)"
or something of the sort. That link would be the functional equivalent
of specifying "this is a sub-entry of X", though better in that it
would specify what kind of sub-entry. It would be in the important
ways (not being overloaded with content, being linked with a related
form) like a minor entry, but there would not be a definition of the
type of entry limiting what information could be, or would have to be
put in.

You are entirely right that derivational variants are subject to the
same sorts of issues. And of course the distinction between what is
inflectional and what is derivational is anything but clear. Nawatl,
like Amele, has reduplications, and ours beautifully straddle the
inflectional-derivational borderline. Reflexives, causatives,
applicatives, nominalizers and verbalizers, and various other
constructions do so as well. In some cases the semantics shift so
unpredictably that you'd better have an entry, and in other cases it is
the form that is odd. In other cases everything is pretty predictable,
but the form is still so common that I (at least) want to list it. In
many of these cases, one would not want to include all the information
that carries over from the basic verb or noun from which the form in
question is derived or inflected. So a "defective" or
"less-than-fully-filled-out" entry is called for, but it still can be
"independent", i.e. capable of being filled out as fully as any other,
and related by appropriate links which let you know its status
vis-à-vis other forms.

Dick did, of course, talk about "lexemes", which traditionally would
be one entry (a citation form) representing a whole paradigm of
inflectionally derived forms. But he also talked about words, so it was
a bit confusing. But I think his point is well taken: anything you want
to make an entry for can be given the same kind of entry, as long as
artificial restrictions are not made about how much information you
will or won't include, and appropriate links can be set up. I have used
this kind of model in LinguaLinks for some time, and find it very
satisfying.

You conclude: "I think Amele is one of those languages that you can't
do a complete dictionary for." Is there any other kind?<span
