<DIV>The first thing to say is that it's not mine. I am merely a guest and
a consultant. </DIV>
<DIV>The head of the project is Dr Alexander Geyken. </DIV>

<DIV>The public face of the DWDS at present consists of two things: </DIV>

<DIV>1. An electronic edition of the six-volume Wörterbuch der deutschen </DIV>
<DIV>Gegenwartssprache (<A href="http://www.dwds.de/woerterbuch">WDG</A>), a
detailed account of the contemporary </DIV>
<DIV>German langauge of the 1970s and 80s and living proof that not
everything</DIV>
<DIV>that went on in the old DDR was bad. It is a wonderfully clear and
useful </DIV>
<DIV>dictionary, for which I have an ever-increasing respect, even though
it is </DIV>
<DIV>"pre-coprus". </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>2. A very large corpus of 20th century texts in machine readable form, with
</DIV>
<DIV>concordancers and other tools. The total corpus consists of 1.2 billion
words, </DIV>
<DIV>but (mainly for copyright reasons) not all of these are publicly
available. </DIV>
<DIV>However, 100 million words of the DWDS corpus are publicly available,
free, </DIV>
<DIV>on line. See <A href="http://www.dwds.de">http://www.dwds.de</A> for
details. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>3. A detailed analysis of German idioms (ongoing), headed by Dr Christiane
</DIV>
<DIV>Fellbaum and funded by the Wolfgang Paul Preis of the Humboldt
Foundation.</DIV>

<DIV>Behind the scenes, all sorts of good things are going on here by way of
</DIV>
<DIV>lexical research -- including a focus on computational
lexicography and a </DIV>
<DIV>large collection of writings on the lexicon. More is planned, depending on

<DIV>the availablilty of funding. It's too early to say more. Watch this
space!</DIV>
