How about a verb such as "elbow", or "knife", or ... ? Would you *not*
derive it from the noun? It seems quite reasonable to me to say that
these are monomorphemic, yet still derived. The basic desideratum seems
to be a case where the morpheme has a very strongly entrenched nominal
sense which speakers thus feel is "basic" and which can hardly fail to
be activated as such when the related verbal sense is activated.
(Zero-derivation or zero morpheme becomes a bit of notational
variation, as far as I can see.)

Langacker's definitions of noun, verb, and so forth, still work very
well for me. A noun (pronoun, NP) is a thing, i.e. a region (a group of
entities) in some domain, and a verb (verb stem, VP) is a process, i.e.
a relationship whose evolution is tracked through conceived time.
Adjectives, adverbs, and adpositions are stative relations (not tracked
through time as verbs are), adpositions are simply transitive
adjectives and/or adverbs. Whether we describe a given situation with
one kind of these or another (e.g. as "love", "(he) loves (s.o.)", or
"amorous") depends on how we choose to construe that situation. We have
considerable freedom to construe many kinds of situations in more than
one way, though some are more difficult than others (e.g. it is easier
to construe "(a) wave" as a process than "(a) pebble").
