Interesting blooper coincidentally reported to me just now:<br>

“I saw the wagon coming around the corner out of control,” said
Hebert’s husband, Henry. “They hit the horse, her horse flared up and<br>
the girl fell off.”<br>
<br>
(from CNN Internet news re the tragic death of a little girl in a
rodeo.) More synaesthesia or something like that? A horse "r'aring" up
is doing much the same as a flame flaring up?<br>

There was an interesting paper at the last Cognitive Linguistics
conference in which someone went to considerable lengths to calculate
the proportion of figurative to literal usage of "blaring" (as I
remember it, anyway), when the great majority of figurative instances
were things like "blaring error" or "blaring mistake" (Google 420,
631); apparently the author was unaware of the much more common
alternatives "glaring error", "glaring mistake" (Google 119K, 46.5K),
etc. <br>
<br>
"flare" up, some meanings of "spare" or "pare" might possibly sort of
fit ... There's probably some sort of synaesthesia going on in a number
of these cases. Having something/someone glare at you does to you
visually what having someone or something blare at you does auditorily.<br>
<br>
It's fun to make "morphemic" charts of things like <br>
<br>
flare flap flop flip flick(er) flash
flirt float(?) etc. ("fl" means the kind of flipping motion
your tongue makes in the airstream as you say it)<br>
stare - stop(?) stipple(?) stick stash
-- stoat(???)<br>
- rap - rip -
rash(?) -- ---<br>
- slap slop slip slick
slash -- --- ("sl" means a slishy slushy
slithery sliding motion, again iconic to what your tongue does.)<br>
- tap top(?) tip tick <br>
- clap clop clip click
clash <br>
- trap - trip trick trash<br>
- lap lop lip lick
lash <br>

ap means a short sharp smart blow<br>
ip means something a bit less, but hard to describe<br>
ash means something "noisy" whose effects last behind it<br>

(all of above is "sort of", "so to speak", etc...)<br>

It's fun to see if you can make a story about how these things fit
together. You have to have an imagination, but there's clearly
something there to talk about. To my mind it's one of the most
fascinating and fun parts of English.<br>

Then thinking about what I had just said, I corrected myself – “no,
I think the word is “glared”. But that slip-up made me wonder if
