I am surprised that it is the SIL person who states"<br><br>
I would have thought it unlikely for there to be a metaphorical <br>
expression in English for an event that happens rarely or perhaps never <br>
at all in everyday experience.<br><br>In fact, as far as I am aware the King James version of the Bible uses the expression several times for the process by which sight is restored, e.g. "Jesus opened the eyes of the blind man"<br>
<br>I have copied below several texts which involve the opening of eyes, ears, and mouth.<br><br>RESTORING SIGHT:<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=47&chapter=20&verse=33&version=9&context=verse">Matthew 20:33</a></strong><br>
They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be <b>opened</b>.<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=29&chapter=35&verse=5&version=9&context=verse">Isaiah 35:5</a></strong><br>
Then the eyes of the blind shall be <b>opened</b>, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=50&chapter=9&verse=10&version=9&context=verse">John 9:10</a></strong><br>
Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes <b>opened</b>?<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=50&chapter=9&verse=14&version=9&context=verse">John 9:14</a></strong><br>
And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and <b>opened</b> his eyes.<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=50&chapter=9&verse=17&version=9&context=verse">John 9:17</a></strong><br>
They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath <b>opened</b> thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=50&chapter=9&verse=21&version=9&context=verse">John 9:21</a></strong><br>
But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath <b>opened</b> his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=50&chapter=9&verse=26&version=9&context=verse">John 9:26</a></strong><br>
Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how <b>opened</b> he thine eyes?<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=50&chapter=9&verse=30&version=9&context=verse">John 9:30</a></strong><br>
The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath <b>opened</b> mine eyes.<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=50&chapter=9&verse=32&version=9&context=verse">John 9:32</a></strong><br>
Since the world began was it not heard that any man <b>opened</b> the eyes of one that was born blind.<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=50&chapter=11&verse=37&version=9&context=verse">John 11:37</a></strong><br>
And some of them said, Could not this man, which <b>opened</b> the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?<br><br>IN THE ? And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD <b>opened</b> the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.<br>

The Lord GOD hath <b>opened</b> mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.<br><br>RESTORING HEARING:<br><br><strong><a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=48&chapter=7&verse=35&version=9&context=verse">Mark 7:35</a></strong><br>
