I was wondering if <span style="" lang="EN-US">ANOIGW </span><span
style="">OPHTHALMOI</span><span style="" lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span>
'open eyes' as used in the NT is metaphorical or not. The Greek verb is
<span style="font-family: HyperGreek;" lang="EN-US"></span><span
lang="EN-US">ANOIGW ‘to open’</span>
and this seems to be its only meaning.<br>

The expression <span style="" lang="EN-US">ANOIGW </span><span
style="">OPHTHALMOI</span><span style="" lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span>
'open eyes' is used in Mt 9.30, Mt 20.33 and in <span style=""
lang="EN-US">Jn 9.10,
14, 17, 21, 26, 30, 32, 10.21, 11.37. The John references all refer to
the same event. The Matthew references refer to two separate (but very
similar) events.<br>

I wondered if </span><span style="" lang="EN-US">ANOIGW </span><span
style="">OPHTHALMOI</span><span style="" lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span>
'open eyes' was a Hebraism transferred into the NT by the Jewish
writers Matthew and John, since Luke (a Gentile and a physician) does
not use this expression when reporting the event in Matthew 20.33 in
Luke 18.41. Instead Luke says <span style="">HINA ANABLEPSON<o:p></o:p></span>
<span style="">‘that I may see again’<o:p></o:p></span>. However,
interestingly, Luke uses <span style="" lang="EN-US">ANOIGW </span><span
style="">STOMA 'open mouth' in </span><span style="" lang="EN-US">Lk
1.64<o:p></o:p></span>
to report Zechariah's release from dumbness. So the conclusion I reach
from this is that the meaning of <span style="" lang="EN-US">ANOIGW
'to open' extends to opening blind eyes and dumb mouths which have been
closed. In other words, </span><span style="" lang="EN-US">ANOIGW </span><span
style="">OPHTHALMOI</span><span style="" lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span>
'open eyes' includes the facility to use the eyes to see and <span
style="" lang="EN-US">ANOIGW </span><span style="">STOMA 'open mouth'
includes the facility to use the mouth to speak. <br>
<br>
</span><span style="" lang="EN-US">For example, when you say in English
a shop is 'open' after being closed for a while, is that a metaphorical
use of 'open'? But in English we don't apply this extension of opening
a facility or faculty to that of eyes and mouths (or ears). This is
because we don't perceive eyes and mouths as things that can be opened
in that way.<br>
<br>
In Amele (Papuan) we have a verb which means 'to open mouth' and a verb
which means 'to open eyes', and we also have a verb which means 'to
open'. With this verb you can say 'open door' but you can also say
'open fire' meaning 'to light a fire'. Is the 'open fire' usage
metaphorical or do the Amele have a different world view about fire?<br>
