I would agree with Piotr's suggestion to give Open Office Writer a try.

It is becoming more mainstream, and it saves to MS Word doc format

easily. I've been impressed-- it handles some of Word's problematic

features well.<br>

This is not a solution to your problem but rather a hint on how to try

and go around it (saving some money on the way) -- have you tried

OpenOffice? <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://why.openoffice.org/">http://why.openoffice.org/</a>

I've just tried your character in both MS Word and OO Writer: Word

didn't like it, while Writer displayed it with no problem -- that is

obviously only the beginning, I don't know how spell-checkers would

handle it. Perhaps it may be worthwhile to assign a clever student to

try out OpenOffice and see if it eliminates your problem.

Using OpenOffice and creating a custom spell-checker for it is

unproblematic (I wouldn't be surprised if you could import Word

spell-checkers into OO; it can certainly open and save Microsoft Office

documents). And it's free and customizable, with a responsive community.

 All you can lose here is a bit of time devoted to trying it.
