PROGRAM
--------------------------------------------

The fourteenth cycle of the Vilem Mathesius Lecture Series, organized by
the Vilem Mathesius Centre for Research and Education in Semiotics and
Linguistics (Charles University), will be held in Prague, Czech Republic,
from March 1 until 12, 1999. The scientific program will consist of
the following invited courses (for preliminary time-schedule see below):

* Bengt Alternberg (Sweden): "The Use of Parallel Corpora in
    Cross-Linguistic Research"
* Wolfgang Dressler (Austria): "Theory of Language and Theory of Language
    Change"
* Julia Hirschberg (USA): tba
* Frederick Jelinek (USA): tba
* Mark Liberman (USA): "Tone and Intonation"
* Stanley Peters (USA): "Quantification in Natural Language"
* Mats Rooth (Germany): "Issues in the Grammar of Focus and Ellipsis"
* Helmut Schnelle (Germany): "Language in the Brain: The New Challenge of
    Linguistic Theory"
* Mark Steedman (UK): "Intonation and Focus"
* Joseph Taglicht (Israel): Intonational Phrasing in English - Focusing
    Structures in English
* Jindrich Toman (USA): tba
* Ken Turner (UK): tba

In addition, there will be lectures by professors from the Czech Republic.

PARTICIPATION
--------------------------------------------

A *limited number* of grants is available to students from Central and
Eastern Europe. The deadline for application is **DECEMBER 20,1998**.

The participation fee for VMC 14 is USD 350, which includes tuition
fee, accommodation, and lunches. In order to ensure accommodation,
(paying) participants should register before **JANUARY 30, 1999*.
