Computational Linguistics and Chinese Language Processing
A Ph.D. Degree Program under the
Taiwan International Graduate Program (TIGP)

Call For Application for Admission
Program Inauguration: Fall 2003

What is TIGP?
The Taiwan International Graduate Program, initiated by Academia Sinica,
focuses on inter-disciplinary areas of study in order to make significant
contributions to human knowledge and well-being. TIGP is a joint adventure
between Academia Sinica and leading research universities in Taiwan. TIGP
students will have access to the research and teaching facilities in
Academia Sinica and a collaborating university.

Computational Linguistics in Taiwan
Information scientists and linguists at Academia Sinica have jointly worked
on Chinese language processing for the past twenty years. Similar
successful inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration is the
dominant model of research in the field of computational linguistics in
Taiwan. Academia Sinica has two Academicians (the most prestigious academic
recognition in Taiwan) whose research areas include computational
linguistics: William S.-Y. Wang, and Ching-Chuan Cheng. In addition, Taiwan
has hosted the 19th International Conference on Computational Linguistics
(COLING 2002) in August. The local computational linguistic community has
held annual computational linguistic conferences (ROCLING) since 1988.

Program Highlights
-Synergy in Interdisciplinary Research: Areas of Concentration
CLA: Corpus Linguistics and Language Archives
CML: Computational Modeling of Language Cognition and Evolution
IRE: Information Retrieval and Information Extraction
KRA: Knowledge Representation and Acquisition
NLP: Natural Language Processing: including Language Understanding,
Knowledge Representation, Parsing, etc. with emphasis on theoretical
computational linguistics
SLP: Spoken Language Processing

Preliminary Sketch of Degree Program
-Expected Duration: Five years. The first three years are guaranteed with
stipends from Academia Sinica. Support for the final two years are the
responsibility of thesis advisor and the students themselves. Initial
stipend is set at NT$30,000/month.

programs, but can be taken at Academia Sinica or at any of the
collaborating programs. The total course work required is at least 25
credits (9 courses).
-Advancement to Candidacy: By the end of the third year
-Internship: Long (one-year) or short-term internships will be available
from leading research centers in the field of CLCLP.
-Degree: A TIGP Ph.D. will be offered jointly with one of the collaborating
university programs.
