Dear HPSG and LFG Colleagues,

I cordially invite you to consider submitting a target article for
the journal Theoretical Linguistics-- in its new format. I believe
this will be a particularly good venue for discussion of
controversial issues of grammatical theory.

Beginning with the upcoming last issue of 2002, Theoretical
Linguistics will adopt a `target and response' format (similar to the
journal Brain and Behavior Sciences). Each issue will feature a
target article, responses to that article from various researchers,
and a reply to those responses from the author(s) of the target
article. The first issue in this format will contain a target
article by John Hawkins on "Symmetries and asymmetries: Their
grammar, typology and parsing", with comments by Matthew Dryer,
Martin Haspelmath, Frederick Newmeyer, Maria Polinsky and Beatrice
Primus, and a final reply.

Under editor-in-chief Manfred Krifka, TL is aiming to air diverse
views from within and outside the mainstream. I think this will be a
good opportunity for serious discussion of issues of
syntactic/semantic/morphological theory and description related to
HPSG, LFG, OT syntax, and other approaches. If you have an idea for
a target article, please contact me at wechsler at mail.utexas.edu .
Preferably include the words 'Theoretical Linguistics' in the subject
header. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Steve Wechsler
Associate Editor
Theoretical Linguistics--An Open Peer Review Journal
