 Call Deadline: 17-Jan-2005

 The theme of the conference is Language and the Law.  Papers on the
following topics are invited:  forensic linguistics, linguistics and
Common Roman Law, legal definitions and libel, courtroom discourse,
translation and the law:  courtroom interpreters, misconceptions about
language and the law, trademark language in advertising, plagiarism,
linguistic change and legal policy planning, the implications of
'legalese' vs. standard language in the courtroom.

 Papers on other topics in theoretical and applied linguistics are also
welcome.

 The abstract should be single spaced and should not exceed 425 words;
it should clearly state the research questions and/or problems addressed,
and give some type of indication to resolve the issue at hand.  Send the
abstract via e-mail to jwoltjer at earthlink.net;  the abstract itself should
be sent as an attachment.  Please provide the following information in the
body of the e-mail itself:  name, affiliation, title of the paper,
address, and audio-visual equipment needs.  Also, for editing and
verification, please send one hard copy of the abstract with the
additional information on a separate sheet in a letter sized envelope to
Johanna J. Woltjer, Conference Coordinator, 511 West 112 Street, Apt. 14,
New York, NY 10025-1634, USA.

 Talks will be 20 minutes long plus five minutes for questions and
discussion. Plenary speakers:  Roger W. Shuy and John M. Conley
