LANGUAGE ACTIVISTS OCCUPY LOCAL RADIO STATION IN PROTEST AT LACK OF WELSH

Eleven members of Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (The Welsh Language Society)
were arrested and later released after they occupied the studios of a
local radio station in west Wales which they say only provides a limited
service in the Welsh language.



NEW CATALAN TV CHANNEL LAUNCHED IN ALGUER, SARDINIA

Next week a new local TV channel called 'Catalan TV' will start
broadcasting in Alguer (Sardinia), becoming the first TV channel
broadcasting in Catalan to the Catalan speakers on the island. 'Catalan
TV' is a private initiative which will start broadcasting six hours per
day, 50% in Catalan and 50% in Italian.



RUSSIAN-SPEAKING SCHOOLCHILDREN FROM LATVIA GAIN SUPPORT IN STRASBOURG

A delegation of Russian speaking school-children from Latvia have returned
from Strasbourg, where they protested against proposed Latvian school
reform with anti-reform placards near the European Parliament (EP)
building on Wednesday last week. The reform plans a switch of
Russian-speaking medium schools to mostly Latvin as the language of
instruction (60% of school lessons) from 1 September 2004.



SPANISH MINISTERS CONTINUE TO SUPPORT EU OFFICIAL STATUS FOR CATALAN, BASQUE AND GALICIAN

On Monday, the Spanish Secretary of State on European Affairs, Alberto
Navarro, announced that he will intend to ask for the official recognition
at European level of Catalan, Galician and Basque languages. The Spanish
government will make the formal request once Ireland makes the request for
Irish.



PLAID CYMRU PUTS PRESSURE ON FOREIGN SECRETARY TO GIVE STATUS TO WELSH IN EUROPE

Plaid Cymru, the Welsh national party, will put pressure on the British
Foreign Minister Jack Straw to give Welsh official Treaty language status
within the European Union. Representatives of the party will meet Mr Straw
in the next few weeks but before then they have started a campaign to make
him support the language in Europe before the referendum on the European
constitution.
