WC education minister loses language policy appeal
June 27, 2005, 12:15

The Supreme Court of Appeal today dismissed an appeal by the Western Cape
education minister who tried to force an Afrikaans-medium public school in
Kuils River to change its language policy. The matter relates to the Mikro
Primary School which refused to accommodate 21 pupils in English earlier
this year. Cameron Dugmore appealed against a judgment delivered in
February in favour of the school and its governing body.

The Cape High Court judgment set aside a decision by the head of the
department in a directive that the principal at Mikro admit and
accommodate the grade one pupils and that they be taught in English.
Mikro's governing body however refused entry to the pupils on the grounds
that the school's language policy did not permit it.
